Oregon Unsheltered Homeless Counts '06 vs '05: Good News and Bad News.

HUD, on its website HERE, has a variety of state homeless data submitted by local governments for 2005 and 2006 as part of the annual HUD Continuum of Care funding process.

I pulled a series of reports for the State of Oregon and did a comparison of the
UNSHELTERED homeless population for 2006 vs. 2005.

The Good News:
  1. The population of UNSHELTERED persons in family households with children declined by 27%.
  2. The population of UNSHELTERED chronic homeless declined by 6%.
The Bad News:
  1. The population of UNSHELTERED homeless in individual households increased by 3%.
  2. The population of UNSHELTERED homeless with severe mental illness increased by 12%.
  3. The population of UNSHELTERED victims of domestic violence increased by 18%.
  4. The population of UNSHELTERED veterans grew by 91%.
  5. The population of UNSHELTERED unaccompanied youth less than 18 increased by 15%.
The data supporting my conclusions can be found in this PDF table HERE.
