Oregon Veteran Homeless Counts and Changes 2011-2019: Total and Unsheltered Veterans Increased Statewide, But With Local Variations.

HUD has posted updated 2019 homeless veteran data HERE.

I compiled a table and a graph pasted below showing Oregon unsheltered homeless veteran and total homeless veteran counts and changes from 2011-2019. (My prior September post HERE had Oregon 2019 total homeless updates, with a focus on child homeless data).

Observations:
  • In 2019 there were 682 unsheltered homeless veterans; in 2011 633.
  • The statewide count of unsheltered veteran homeless count increased statewide (+49/8%), but was down in 3 county Portland metro area (-38/-12%) and up in areas outside the Portland metro area by 87/28%.
  • NOTE: Oregon had an allocation of 2,402 VASH vouchers as of December 2018.(See my April post HERE for more on VASH utilization). As of June 2019 HUD data show 1,683 VASH vouchers were in use, leaving 719 VASH vouchers not yet used. That is more than the 2019 count of 682 unsheltered homeless veterans.
  • In 2019 there were 1,241 homeless veterans; in 2011 1,220.
  • The count of total homeless veterans increased slightly (+21/2%), including an increase of 20/3% in the 3 county Portland metro area. In more localized areas outside of Portland Medford reported a big decrease in homeless veterans (73/41%), while the Balance of State CoC reported a big increase.(89/24%).
