Metro New Multifamily Inventory Shows Addresses for 24K Projects, 338K Units; HALF of all MF Units are in City of Portland.

Last week Metro published an inventory of multifamily housing in the three county area covering more than 338,000 multifamily units.

The data includes address, city and county, unit counts, unit type, and year built. It does NOT have identification of any affordability restrictions although I suspect that data may be available by cross referencing other data.

I prepared the three page PDF summary HERE and embedded below that shows a break out of unit counts by geography and unit types for multiple time periods. I also show county share (and City of Portland share) by time period and unit type.

HERE is a link to a Metro map of this newly updated multifamily inventory data.

And pasted below is a picture with a my 3 county summary of MF units by type and by the time period the MF project was constructed:

Some observations:

Share of All MF Housing Units

  • Clackamas: 14%,
  • Multnomah: 58%,
  • Washington:28%,
  • City of Portland: 50%
ADU'S
Portland had 94% of all ADU's.

Manufactured housing
Clackamas had 39% of all manufactured homes vs 14% of the 3 county total MF units.

Portland Share of All MF Units
Portland's share of all MF housing units dropped to 20% from 1989-1998 and reached 71% from 2009-2019.

NOTE: I count 914 projects with 32.667 units where the date built is unknown--those likely show up in the pre 1979 time period in my tables.
