2018-2019: CIty of Portland Housing Permits Down 14.8%, Including a Decline in Multifamily Permits and a BIG Drop in SIngle Family Permits.

Census preliminary housing permit data for CY 2019 is out.

The chart below shows my calculation of changes in the preliminary CY 2019 vs preliminary CY 2018 data for the City of Portland.

Observations:
  1. Permits were down across the board with a total decline of 885 units, including a 262 unit decline in SF, and a 623 unit decline in MF.
  2. On a percentage basis this means an overall permit decline of 14.8%, a decline of 27.2% for single family, and a decline of 12.4% for multifamily permits. (Note that  in contrast in my post yesterday I noted a STATEWIDE Oregon permit increase of 7%, a 3% permit decline in single family permits, and a 19% increase in multifamily permits.
  3. Note also that SF permits made up only 14% of all permits (703/5,094) in the City of Portland in 2019.
