Oregon MF Building Permits Were Majority of Building Permits in 2019; MF Permits Were Up 19%, While SF Permits Declined by 3%.

The Census today published preliminary housing permit estimates (using monthly estimates) for all of 2019. My calculations are below.

For Oregon
  1. Total 2019 estimated permits were 20,983, UP 1,454 (7%) from the 19,529 total monthly estimates for all of 2018.
  2. Single family estimated permits were slightly, DOWN 298 (3%) from 10,358 the SF permit monthly estimate for all of 2018. This means that SF estimated permits dropped BELOW 50% of ALL Oregon estimated permits in 2019 (they were 53% of all estimated permits in 2018).
  3. MF 2019 estimated permits (all units 2 and above) were 10,923, UP 1,752 (19%) from the 9,171 total monthly estimates for all of 2018.
  4. 5+ unit multifamily estimates were 10,154, UP 1,547 (18%) from the 8,607 total monthly estimates for all of 2018. (2019 estimated 5+ unit permits were 48% of all estimated permitted units vs. 44% in 2018)
The graph pasted below reflects these counts:

Preliminary permits are subject to annual revision, but that will not occur until May.  My comparisons used monthly estimates for both 2019 and 2019.

Likely more to come once I get a chance to look more in depth at the permit numbers.
