Through July Less than Half of National PUA Eligibility Determinations Have Been for the Self Employed, But in Oregon 85% Were for Self Employed.

The US Department of Labor has a monthly report of PUA activity, the 902P report.

I downloaded the latest version and did a breakout by states showing the total number of eligibility determinations made and the percentage of those that were for the self employed.

I put together a 2 page PDF file HERE, and embedded below, that includes a map and a ranked order of states by the cumulative percentage of all PUA eligibility determinations made that were self employed workers, one of several categories of workers eligible for PUA:.

  • Self-employed workers.
  • Independent contractors.
  • Non-profit employees.
  • Gig economy workers.
  • Part-time workers who do not have enough work history to be eligible regular UI

To date 46% (3,911,768/8,641,873) of national PUA claimants whose eligibility has been determined were self employed, but in Oregon that percentage was higher at 85% (29,376/34,606), ranking as the 6th highest state percentage in the country. In contrast, of the more than 434,000 PUA eligibility determinations in Washington state only 108,000 (25%) of those have been reported as self employed.

Note that many states are still NOT reporting PUA activity so when they do these results could change.
