I downloaded that 2019 data for Oregon, along with other similar preliminary monthly going back to 2001. The data includes the location and type of permit for nearly 327,000 housing units permitted over this 19 year period, from 277 permitting jurisdictions.
You can find that data in the Excel file that I posted HERE and embedded below-it opens in a pivot table allowing quick search by jurisdiction. (You will have to scroll right to see all columns in your browser; my recommendation is to download the file instead of viewing in the browser).
The data includes breakouts for
- All permits
- Single-family permits
- 2 unit/duplex permits
- Three and four unit permit permits
- 5+ unit permits All multifamily permits
I also added a summary worksheet that breaks out data for the City of Portland and shows the annual counts and share by structure type for the CIty of Portland, the state, and the state without the City of Portland.
Below is a snapshot of a statewide count of annual housing permits by type and year including counts and shares; you may have to click/save to see the data more clearly. Note that in 2019:
- 48% of statewide units permitted were single family.
- Multifamily permits were the second highest in 19 years (2017 had 101/1.1% more MFunits permitted than 2019).
Notes
- The data may vary somewhat from final annual housing unit permit data, but that data for 2019 won't be available until May.
- HUD says that it's permit data is more complete than the Census posted permit data. "Data on the Census web site does not include concurrent year revisions to preliminary monthly data, …In a nutshell, Census displays only their originally published data while SOCDS [HUD] data reflects all subsequent Census revisions."
